Next year, country music star Taylor Swift will be returning to the United States for an another leg of her sold-out tour, titled “Fearless”. She will be swinging into Austin, Texas on March 10, 2010, appearing with Kellie Pickler at the University of Texas’s Frank Erwin Center. The show, which will be opened by new artist Gloriana, sold out within minutes. Swift’s second album “Fearless” garnered her the highest debut for any country artist in 2008, and the album’s chart-topping singles, including “Love Story” and “White Horse” cemented Swift’s position as a top crossover artist. Taylor Swift’s music has such a diverse appeal that she was even recognized by the Academy for Country Music for attracting younger fans to the genre. Taylor Swift is also the youngest country artist ever to be nominated for country music’s prestigious Entertainer of the Year award. Taylor Swift’s two albums have sold almost 600,000 combined in digital downloads, making her albums the top 2 bestselling country albums in digital history.
Her fame has not been without controversy, as last September’s MTV Video Music Awards had one of the national news incidents as soon as she won the award for Best Female Video. Rapper Kanye West leaped onstage, snatched the microphone out of Taylor’s shocked hands and claimed that in fact, Beyonce’s video for her single “Single Ladies” was one of the best of all time. The negative press for Kanye proved to ultimately help Taylor, garnering her more appearances than ever. Kanye sooned called to apologize.
Not only has Taylor Swift been recognized as a musical artist, but she also has been recognized for her philanthropic efforts, launching a campaign in 2007 to protect children from internet predators. She also donated $100,000 to the Red Cross following the massive flooding that affected Iowa in 2008, and has generously given to the St. Jude’s Children’s research Hospital.
The Frank Erwin Center was constructed in’77 for the University of Texas at Austin. In 2003, the Center finished a $55 million renovation. New safety upgrades, concession stands,renovations on the Lone Star Room reception hall, and new scoreboards were some of the many renovations completed.
Those who are attending the concert and are traveling from outside of Austin should note that there are several hotels near the Frank Erwin Center, including a La Quinta Inn, Sheraton and Super 8; To drive to the arena, do the following: (From the Austin Bergstrom International Airport) 1. After exiting airport, turn left onto TX-71/E. Bastrop Hwy. 2. Turn right onto I-35. 3. Exit 15th Street/MLK Blvd. 4. Turn left onto 15th St. 6. Turn right on to Red River St.
Taylor Swift will make her acting debut next year in the Garry Marshall-directed film, “Valentine’s Day” as part of an ensemble cast. She had previously appeared in the “Hannah Montana” movie and “The Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience” in 2009.
