The Red Violin: This multi-episode film follows the destiny of a hexed violin from 17th-century Italy to 18th century Vienna, 19th century England, 20th-century China and present day Montreal. Colorful locales and enthralling premises sustain limited interest all the way through. The Great Moment: This perplexing biography of an anesthesia pioneer wavers from comedy to drama. The film is uselessly filled with aggravating flashbacks. Cast includes Joel McCrea, Harry Carey, William Demarest, Franklin Pangborn, Gmdy Sullon, and Louis Jean Heydt. (83 minutes, 1944)

Trade: A thirteen-year-old gal is kidnapped by members of a sex-trafficking ring. As her older brother follows her tracks, he hooks up with a Texas cop (Kline) who has his own rationales for chasing this outfit of bad guys. This downbeat drama reveals a stunning, debasing circumstance, although it’s maddeningly choppy, one second daring and commanding (particularly with Finnish actress Bachleda) and the next remarkably corny. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Alicia Bachleda, Paulina Gaitan, Kathleen Gati, Pasha D. Lychnikoff, Anthony Crivello, Linda Emond, Zack Ward, Cesar Ramos, Marco Perez, and Tim Reid. (120 minutes, 2007)

Solarkids: Futuristic adolescent rubbish has Gertz and a bunch of her friends are trapped by a Nazi-like group inside a fortress. The group plans to get out with the help of “Bohdi”, an old mystical force. Cast includes Richard Jordan, Jami Gertz, Jason Patric, Lukas Haas, Charles Durning, Peter DeLuise, Adrian Pasdar, Sarah Douglas, Frank Talk, Terrence Mann, and Kelly Bishop. (194 minutes, 1986)

The Fog: A thick haze from the Pacific hangs over a Northwest seaside village, bringing with it murderous and vengeful ghosts. A lame redo of John Carpenter’s 1980 film modifies the structure but does not improve on the first edition. Cast includes Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Selma Blair, DeRay Davis, Kenneth Welsh, Adrian Hough, Sara Botsford, and Rade Sherbedgia. (100 minutes, 2005)

Commandos: Stereotype-filled war drama with typical structure; Italian commandos, led by a few stalwart Americans, need to secure a vital retreat in the North African desert before Allied landings. Cast includes Lee Van Cleef, Jack Kelly, Giampiero Albertini, Marino Marie, Pierre Paulo Capponi, and Duilio Del Prete. (89 minutes, 1964)

Air Force 1: This movie is a supercharged thriller in regards to aggressive Kazakhstani alarmists taking over Delta one and keeping the President, his family, and his entourage prisoner in midair. This film is an extreme, brutal, nail biting popcorn fodder movie, anchored by Ford as a 2 fisted president who’s not scared to get physical. Cast includes Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, Glenn Close, Dean Stockwell, Wendy Crewson, Paul Guilfoyle, William H. Macy, Liesel Matthews, Xander Berkeley, Bill Smitrovich, Elya Baskin, and Jiirgen Prochnow. (124 minutes, 1997)

Red: The last film in Kieslowski’s “3 Colors” trilogy which, like Blue and White, might stand alone with its self contained tale. Fashion model Jacob meets upset, retired judge Trintignant accidentally, then creates a relationship with him and enters his cloistered, secret life. Set in Geneva, this is a story of a few entangled lives. Cast includes Irene Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Frederique Feder, Jean-Pierre Lorit, Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, and Benoit Regent. (99 minutes, 1994)
