The music industry is one of the world’s biggest industries. It has been this way for many decades and it doesn’t appear to be deteriorating. Recently people are more and more able to download music for free illegally on the Internet which is creating problems in terms of the amount of money that can be made by musical artists.
Vinyl record and record tape (physical hardware) in times of old were the only way in which you could listen to music. The first CD that came about brought the first changes about.
CD’s were a break-through in the way we listen to music because they were the first medium to store music digitally, i.e. the music is stored as a file that can be put on a computer and played, and this was the first step towards the birth of the mp3.
From 20 years ago the storage of music has completely changed. In the 60’s you were only able to listen to your favourite music on a record player and now you can listen to it on a device no bigger than the palm of your hand. Not only can you listen to your favourite music but you can add and remove songs as and when you please.
Listening to music has now been made considerably easier thanks to the way in which music is now stored. This however also means that being able to access music has become a lot cheaper too. Various websites on the Internet provide an opportunity to buy music (usually in an mp3 format). This is much cheaper than buying the same music in a CD format. Now people favour mp3 more than CD so the need to mass-produce CDs has decreased and therefore companies do not need to charge as much to cover their costs.
